The ham can be glazed or cooked with different types of fruits, such as apples and cherries. Another great reason for ham’s popularity is for its taste. Ham is a delicious meat choice that is liked by many for its rich flavor.
Comparison between Canned and Fresh Pineapple for Precooked Ham
Ham and pineapple generally pair well when combined. There is something very tasty about the blend of cooked ham and sweet pineapple that makes pineapple ham an appetizing main dish to share at the table.
I tried this ham recipe with both canned and fresh pineapple. There were similarities and differences. First off, canned pineapple or even frozen pineapple are great alternatives if fresh pineapple is unavailable at the supermarket. I initially first made and tried this ham dish with fresh pineapple. I peeled and cut a fresh pineapple. I added the sliced ham to a baking dish, sugar, butter, fresh pineapple slices, and freshly blended pineapple juice to the ham. Then baked. I followed the same process with the canned pineapple. The only difference is that I added canned pineapple slices and the juice that comes in the can. Then I baked the ham.
Similarities: Both ham recipes had a nice balance of meaty, sweet, and juicy flavors. It was a delicious combination of rich, slightly smokey, and savory flavors.
Differences: The first ham recipe with the fresh pineapple was an incredible pineapple ham dish. Fresh pineapple gives a natural sweetness to the ham. The canned pineapple has artificial sweet flavors that do not complement very well on a dish. The artificial flavors have a bit of an unpleasant aftertaste.
Thoughts: Fresh pineapple would be the best recommendation for this pineapple brown sugar ham recipe. I would go for the canned pineapple if time was limited. It is way more convenient than having to peel and cut a pineapple. Also, if fresh pineapple is not attainable, then canned or frozen pineapple are also good pineapple options.
Pineapple brown sugar ham with fresh pineapple
Pineapple Brown Sugar Ham
Pineapple brown sugar ham is baked ham with brown sugar, butter, pineapple slices, and pineapple juice. The ham is then baked in the oven while the ingredients are slowly marinating in the ham. I bought a fully cooked, sliced ham; therefore, the cooking is more for allowing time so that the ingredients can fully marinate all together.
Ham
The ham I bought was a precooked sliced honey ham by Smithfield Anytime. This ham was purchased from my local Walmart in the ham section. Other supermarkets have various ham flavors and sizes of ham, especially this time of the year. Honey ham is a popular ham type, mainly because the taste of honey ham is delicious. Whole ham can work fine for this type of recipe. Sliced ham can be more convenient, as the ham comes conveniently and evenly sliced without the need to cut. This is a great option for those who do not want to cut ham. I often prefer cut ham. It can be as good as whole ham and saves time from cutting, especially at large gatherings.
Canned Pineapple
For pineapple, I went with Dole canned pineapple. The Dole brand has sliced and chunky canned pineapples. For this recipe, I went for sliced pineapple. This is more for aesthetic purposes. The slices of pineapple give a nice presentation when displayed on the dish with the ham. The pineapple chunks work just as well as sliced pineapple.
