Cake mixes and baked cakes

  1. Grease the pan with butter.
  2. Add the cake mixtures to the pans.
  3. Bake the cakes, then let them cool.

Red velvet cake crumbs

  1. Cut and remove the dome from the red velvet cake.
  2. Gather the cake pieces.
  3. Place the cake pieces in a food processor.
  4. Process the cake pieces into crumbs.

Homemade cream cheese frosting

  1. In a bowl, add the cream cheese, butter, sugar, and lemon zest. Mix until combined.
Add cream cheese frosting to another bowl and add a few drops of blue food coloring.


Add frosting and assemble the cake.

  1. Cut and remove the dome from the white cake.
  2. Add the cream cheese frosting over the red velvet cake.
  3. Then add the blue cream cheese frosting over the cream cheese frosting.
  4. Place the white cake over the blue cream cheese frosting.
  5. Cover the entire cake with the cream cheese frosting.
  6. Add and sprinkle the red velvet crumbs on the cake.

  • ½ box red velvet cake mix
  • ½ box white cake mix
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons salted butter

Cream cheese frosting

  • 2 packages cream cheese
  • 1 butter stick
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • ½ tablespoon lemon zest
  • blue food coloring

Garnish
  • Red cake crumbs

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.

Red velvet cake mixture. In a bowl, add ½ box red velvet cake mix, two eggs, ½ cup of vegetable oil, and ½ cup of water. Mix the cake mixture. 

White cake mixture. In a bowl, add ½ box white cake mix, two eggs, ½ cup of vegetable oil, and ½ cup of water. Mix the cake mixture. 

Cake pans. Grease two baking pans with butter and sprinkle cake flour on the pans. Pour the red velvet cake mixture into one pan and the white cake mixture into the other pan. 

Bake. Bake the cake for 45 minutes. 

Cream cheese frosting. In a bowl, add the cream cheese, butter, sugar, and lemon zest. Using a hand mixer, blend the ingredients. Mix until smooth. 

Blue cream cheese frosting. Add ¼ cup of the cream cheese frosting to a bowl and add a few drops of blue food coloring. Mix until fully combined. 

Baked cakes. Remove the cakes from the oven. Let the cakes cool. Shape the cake. Trim off the domes of both cakes with a bread knife. 

Red velvet crumbs. After shaping and cutting the domes of the red velvet cake, save the cake pieces. Add the red velvet pieces to a food processor. Process the cake pieces into crumbs. 

Frosting on the cakes. Add the cream cheese frosting to the top of the red velvet cake, evenly coating the frosting. Then add the blue frosting, evenly coating the blue frosting. Place the white cake on top of the blue frosting and the red velvet cake. Cover the entire cake with the cream cheese frosting until the entire cake is covered. 

Garnish. Garnish the cake with the red velvet crumbs.
