For this grill day, we grilled a combination of meats, corn, and tasty vegetables. There are a variety of meats that are excellent for grilling. Beef is a popular choice for grilling in the United States, such as burgers and sirloin steaks. Hot dogs are also another popular meat option. Turkey burgers are a nice alternative to beef burgers for the grill. For meats, we chose a combination of meats: beef, chicken, pork, and sausage. We also chose corn, brussels sprouts, and mushrooms for grilling. The grilled food was marinated with a tasty and healthy homemade vegetable marinade.
Meats
For the meats, the beef, chicken, pork, and sausage were marinated in a honey barbecue sauce overnight. Marinating the meat overnight helps to evenly distribute the flavor of the barbecue sauce, resulting in more flavorful results from the meat. Small pieces of beef were cut. The sausage was cut into thick, round pieces. The pork loin chops were cut into smaller pieces. The beef pieces, chicken wings, pork chop pieces, and sausage pieces were then added to a container and marinated with the barbecue sauce.
Vegetables
For vegetables, brussels sprouts and white mushrooms were vegetable choices for this grill day. Brussels sprouts are a good vegetable option for the grill. I bought frozen brussels sprouts, which are a great alternative to fresh brussels sprouts. There is food that can be grilled from frozen, though for some foods, such as meats, it is better to defrost prior to grilling. For the mushrooms, I bought white, medium-sized mushrooms. The larger mushrooms are best for grilling.
Marinade
This is a tasty homemade marinade. The marinade consists of a combination of vegetable ingredients. For the vegetables, it includes cilantro, green onion, purple onion, tomato, and red and yellow sweet peppers. For the dressing, it includes apple cider vinegar, lemon, olive oil, and salt. Cut the vegetable ingredients, then combine them with the dressing ingredients. This marinade is very delicious and excellent for grilling.
Baby Potatoes & Brussels Sprouts
For potatoes, a combination of red and yellow baby potatoes was marinated with the vegetable marinate. The brussels sprouts were also marinated. Both the baby potatoes and brussels sprouts were placed on aluminum foil, ready for grilling. The foil helps prevent food from dropping into the grill or sticking to the grill.
The Grill
Meats & Mushrooms
This is a homemade grill that was made for special grill days. For the grill, I used wood instead of charcoal. Wood is a good alternative for grilling. It generally provides a unique and tasteful flavor. Wood heats up the grill rapidly and tends to burn longer compared to charcoal. The wood also gives a well-done smokey taste to the food. The marinated meats from the barbecue sauce were added to a baking pan and then placed on the grill. The white mushrooms were added to metal skewers. The vegetable marinade was added to all the meats and mushrooms. The grill was heated prior to adding the food. Once on the grill, the meats and mushrooms began to cook quickly. The meat and mushrooms were turned over every few minutes.
At this point, within half an hour, the meat and mushrooms were almost done cooking.
The marinated baby potatoes and brussels sprouts on the foil were added to the grill. The brussels sprouts were completely cooked within half an hour. The baby potatoes took a bit longer to cook than the brussels sprouts. The potatoes were left cooking for a few more minutes, making sure they were tender and ready.
Corn
Fresh corn is still in season in the United States. Many supermarkets and farmer markets offer fresh corn for sale at an affordable price, though the price may increase as the season changes. I grilled the corn on a small, homemade grill. For the corn, I grilled the corn with the husks. This gives the corn a nice, smokey flavor.
Grilled Food: Reverse Marinade
The food items from this grilled day were cooked at a well-done temperature. The grilled meats and mushrooms were added to a medium-sized container, and then more vegetable marinade was added to all the meats and mushrooms.
The baby potatoes and brussels sprouts were removed from the grill, and then additional marinade was added.
Marinating meats and vegetables post-grilling entails marinating the grilled food in the marinade. This gives the food additional flavor by adding marinade to freshly grilled meats. Reverse marinating also saves some time compared to an overnight marinade. Marinating post-grill is ideal for saving time and adding fresh flavors to fresh grilled food.
