French Mulberry

French mulberry, also known as the American beautyberry, is a shrub that grows a purple shade of berries in small clusters around the stem of the shrub. These berries are beautiful and attractive to add to a garden or landscape.

The French mulberry is native to the southeastern region of the US. The berries can be found and grown in forests, woodland areas, and gardens.

Climate & Planting

The French mulberry shrub can grow in full sun and partial shade. The berries can adapt to warm, humid climates and are heat-tolerant. The best results for growing the berries are in full sun, though partial shade is fine for growing berries.

These French mulberries are planted in different locations. A few of the berries are grown near an iron fence in partial shade in the garden. A few of the other berries are being grown in a butterfly house with other vegetation. The other berries are planted in full sun in the outdoor garden.

Food & Drinks

The berries are known to be edible with a bitter taste, but the taste may change in the season to have a sweeter texture. These berries are not pleasant for everyone, as some say they have an unpleasant flavor. It is not the best choice to eat a handful of these berries. Cooking the berries may omit the acidic taste.

With the French mulberry, the online sources are mixed about whether they are edible or not, but they are beautiful to observe in the garden. Opt for other berries, as French mulberry is an attractive shrub to observe rather than consume. There are a few recipes made from French mulberries.
